[nfb-talk] Fwd: {Single Payer} Disabled protesters dragged from McConnell's office! So where our blind organizations?

Oh of course we need more blind people in competitive employment. That goes without saying. And who will pay for the right to healthcare? Everyone. But most especially attacks on those individuals and corporations earning more than $1 million per year per individual?

When we talk about our right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, doesn't that include the right to visit a doctor when needed and thus to remain alive? If so then we need Medicare for all in the country from the time we are born to the time we die.

You might have heard these stats from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 49% of births in the US are financed by Medicaid, 30% of disabled people get their health care from Medicaid, and somewhere around 10% of the population as a whole get their health care from Medicaid. But those stats mean something different to conservatives like Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and Rand Paul than they do to most Americans. To those guys, those stats are the sign of a failing system. Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA subsidies make up about a quarter of the federal budget. Throw in SSI and it's about half. That's a big chunk and if you want to balance the budget, that's an obvious place to start.

You're not likely to improve that statistic by cutting back on the program that provides health care for nearly half of the births in this country. Cutting back on Medicaid is going to make it harder for disabled people to stay in their homes. It will make it harder for people to get preventative care. Those things are going to cost us all money in the long run. There are only 2 ways to save money on health care, let people die when they get sick or make the health care system more efficient. We are not going to make ourselves a better, stronger nation by taking health care away from 23 million Americans.

The only thing standing between it and passin is a handful of Republican Senators, and to you there's nothing to worry about? The only thing that is going to keep that bill from passing is, in fact, action on the part of organizations like the NFB.

As an organization, though, I would think it would make sense to get a better sense of where this is going before we pull out all stops as some have already done. As it stands right now, there is a pretty good chance the current bill isn't going anywhere as it is written because of a number of Republicans who are not supporting it. Having people willing to call attention to this issue is a good thing, but I also don't see a problem in an organization waiting to see if we're going to need further action later. This is probably going to be a marathon and not a fifty yard dash. Another aspect of all this is that it is easy to put all ones energy into a single issue and a single event without concerned about any other legislative activities that might be affected by one's action. It is much more difficult to measure one's response to maximize one's general effectiveness and to make sure there is energy left when it is most needed. I hope that our leadership would consider how are actions might affect the other issues that we're trying to address. Finally, I don't see a problem with us conserving some of our energy to fight for things that nobody else is fighting for. I think one can make a decision not to pull out all stops to deal with an issue knowing that there are others who will do it while still feeling the issue is important. .

That whole story is on that same Rachel Madow podcast. They snarled traffic in Denver for a day and a half to protest the fact that they couldn't use city buses. It made me think of all the debates I have had on this list with people who feard a "backlash" from pushing for our rights.
