[NFB-Talk] IRS Lawsuit

Hey Sherri! Always good to hear from you, on the lists or otherwise. I
agree with you, we need as an organization to set the example here. But I
would also say that the Social Security Administration has been sending
people with print disabilities notices in altedrnative formats for years.
When I get a notice about my benefits, I always get a letter in Braille and
the print letter as well, and this has been so for a while. So why can't
the IRS do the same thing for taxpayers? The technology and the means to do
it are there. Plus the law suit recognizes that what the IRS is doing is
illegal here so simply on that basis alone it needs to be corrected. Why
someone isn't aware that they owe huge amounts in taxes or isn't looking out
for that possibility is a mystery, and we can speculate all we want about
that. But for some reason this person fell through the cracks and that
needs to be corrected. Talk soon, good to hear from you. Remember too,
this driver is blind and reads Braille, LOL. Just thought I'd put that in
for levity.

I would like to chime in in agreement. I have been a member of NFB for a
very long time. I have received many mailed notices in the past from NFB
and NONE have been in Braille. Perhaps large print, but I can't vouch for
that since I can't see print. If we are going to sue people for not sending
out tax notices in Braille or large print, then we need to set the example
with our own members. Just a thought.

Hi,

I have to agree.
How can someone not know they owe $25,000 in taxes?

Hello list:

I don't post here often, but a recent message I read from Chris Danielson
got my attention. The post alleges that the NFB will file suit against the
IRS for not sending Braille notices to blind taxpayers. I have to say, that
in general, I have agreed with most endeavors the NFB has taken on, but I
find this one to be a bit flawed. First, the post states that the agency
should mail Braille/large print notices to blind Taxpayers. How would an
agency that processes over 100 million returns per year keep up with this
information? Some of us do self identify by checking the "blindness" box on
the return, but many do not. Furthermore, there are a number of Taxpayers
who are blind and who do not read Braille. Secondly, I think there should be
a sense of personal responsibility here. I can speak for myself only, but I
feel it is my responsibility to read my own mail. Technology has advanced to
the point that I no longer need a sighted reader, and while I rarely receive
paper letters of importance, I use technology to read them as often as I get
time. We all strive to be first class citizens, and for access to be
afforded to us just as our piers would, but we also have to take ownership
of our own situations.

Please accept this message as it was intended. I do not mean to criticize
any person, but I am simply voicing my opinion. I am sure there will be
those who disagree and that is your right.

Best regards

Kaye Baker
