That sounds like a very scary encounter you had. You might consider checking
out some of the Gracey martial arts schools. For different reasons I took
martial arts, and I think I can defuse a situation or defend myself if
necessary. 

If you don't find a car pool/van pool program you might look into paying a
low income senior to drive you to a point where you feel comfortable using
mass transit or ride-share. Placing announcements at senior centers or
apartment complexes designated as senior affordable housing might result in
find folks who can help you.
