[NFBC-Info] Legally Blind University Professor Seeking Your Support Re Denied Accommodation Request

Dear NFB of California (NFBC) Fellow Members,

My name is Bassam Farah and am an NFB member. I am a legally blind professor
at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles, California, U.S.,
requesting to schedule / teach all my courses in one semester as a
disability reasonable accommodation. I currently teach 2 sections of the
undergrad Strategic Management course in Fall term and 2 sections of that
same course in Spring term; I am requesting to teach all my 4 sections of
that same course in one term. On average 8 sections of this course are
offered in Fall, and 10 sections of this course are offered in Spring. 

I received this accommodation in my former university in Lebanon, the
American University of Beirut, for many years, which made me much more
productive and effective in my teaching, research, and service (in terms of
teaching evaluations, research quality and output, service quality and
output, etc.). I always worked from my university's office, during my
teaching term, non-teaching term, and summer. This allowed me to excel in my
teaching and service in my teaching term and in my research and service in
my non-teaching and summer terms. 

About three years ago I moved to my current university, LMU, in Los Angeles,
California, U.S. I am requesting the same accommodation and they are asking
me if I know of other blind / legally blind / visually impaired faculty
members who receive such an accommodation (especially in U.S.). 

Receiving this accommodation will not create an undue hardship for other
profs, department, or school, as the course that I teach almost all the time
is a strategic management capstone course that all business students (all
majors) need to take in their senior year before they graduate and for which
we offer about 18 sections per year taught by more than 10 tenured, tenure
track, full time, and part time profs. 

If you receive or know anyone who receives such an accommodation (whether in
US or outside of US), I would be extremely grateful if you let me know at
your earliest convenience. As I truly need this accommodation to be able to
perform all my job responsibilities well (teaching, research, and service),
and the more profs I know of, who receive or received this accommodation,
the more likely I will receive this accommodation myself here at LMU. Thus,
I truly need your help!
