I use a book edge scanner which has no auto feeder. If you do replace
your scanner, you might consider an OpticBook 3600.

Do scanners that edge feed vs.. end feed have less tendency to jam?  My
Epson 4490 miss-feed or chewed up a document six times today resulting
in a great deal of frustration and suppressed Fowle lanage.  This thing
may be headed for the surplus list.....
