Unfortunately, I find myself researching such question myself and I have
gotten to the point where I can say that there is no free or low-cost
software for OCR that one can use with scanners. Not that I can think of,
anyways, for the visually impaired. However, I believe that many scanners
come with an installation CD with software loaded in it that may contain OCR
software for use with popular word processing programs out there. The only
problem is, that these built-in, off-the-shelf, OCR packaged software that
comes with scanners and / or that can be downloaded from the scanner's
manufacturer's support page as drivers, do not have the quality and accuracy
of products that cost big bucks just like Openbook and curtzwale 1000 that
I'm sure most have come to love.

Subject: [nfbcs] OCR software for Windows

My Lions Club got a call from a blind woman who needs help with her
computer. Its running some version of Microsoft Windows. Probably XP. She
has a scanner but has no software for it. Does anyone have a recommendation
for free or low-cost OCR software for Windows?
