[nfbcs] Computer Braille Help, Please?

Ian,

There are sometimes different things meant by computer braille which can cause some confusion. There was a very old code that assigned all 63 dot
combinations to characters. This is the code used to drive braille embossers and braille displays. There is another computer code that is used when
computer notation is used in a braille text. It is largely based on the old computer code but it has a number of extgensions. The computer code for which
you are prompted when you are asked to enter certain data is more like the old code, but the BrailleNote modifier, space pressed simultaneously with the
letter U, extends the code some. This all sounds worse than it is, but I am explaining this so that you understand why you may sometimes get different
answers. You have to be very specific about what you are trying to accomplish with computer braille and where. I believe some of what HumanWare has
implemented is covered in their manuals.

When I used our BrailleNote MPower, and I think the Apex is the same, I entered the following into an email address and it worked:

Space with U followed by the letter b, then l, u, and e, followed by the numbers in the lower cell as dots 2, 2-3, 2-5, and then I entered dots 2-3-4-6 as the
exclamation point. I also noted that dots 4-5-6 yielded the underline character which was discussed earlier.

I am not real familiar with how you switch to computer braille in a document, though, and frankly, with the HumanWare announcement of some support for
Nemeth Code, how this works will probably change what you might find useful.

Ian, I was a math major before any of these devices were available, so I cannot say with any authority how such devices work for solving mathematical
equasions. There are people who I've talked to who say that it is important to be able to "slide" a display up and down in a document keeping the same
position within the line is very important. I would only risk sounding like a throwback to some degree by saying that you might at least want the option to
do math on paper with a Perkins brailler. You seem to have done amazingly well considering the short time you have used braille, so you have likely
already had to develop an approach that works for you to get through the courses you have passed.

If you would explain more where you are needing to enter computer braille, I can perhaps be of more help, although there are probably others here who
are already doing what you are wanting to do. I believe you are on the blind math list as well and someone there might be able to help as well.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson
