Hello Mr. Wunder

If your friend wants to use a PC, have you considered NVDA (Non-Visual
Desktop Access)? There is a learning curve as there are with any screen
reading technologies whether it's PC's JAWS, WindowEyes, SuperNova or MAC's
VoiceOver. The one thing you can say about NVDA is that the cost is right
(a donation is requested for its download).

On the other hand, if your friend is a technophobe or worse yet a Luddite,
there is a screen reader that is all but a turnkey product. It is based on
a command tree format so that upon turning on the computer it asks the user
what would you like to do today; If you want to write an email choose the
number 1 on your keypad; if you want to visit the Internet choose the
number 2 on your keypad; and so on ... Interestingly enough as you make
choices from the command tree it then steps you through every step of what
the user is trying to accomplish. You can't have your hand held any closer
than that .... technologically speaking.

Hope this is helpful.
