Hi Mike,

I did turn off my router and tried that with the same result. I am going to
try by passing the router now and see what that does.

We really can't answer that question. Have you thought of either bypassing
your router and making a hardware connection to test this hypothesis or
using a direct connection (my router has one) to try that out?

What did your friend's error messages look like?

Oh yeah ... have you turned off your router and modem, waited a minute or so
and fired them back up again and *then* tried the connection?

Mike

Thanks for the suggestions. A friend came over today with their laptop.
They connected to my WiFi, the same one my computer is connected to. They
could not access www.nfbnet.org either. Is it possible that my wireless
router has a virus? I heard about this from a friend last year that his at
home had a virus and he had to end up getting a new router.

Steve,

One thing that occurs to me is that NFBNET was moved some time back from a
physical server to a virtual server, and possibly its IP address changed.
It is possible that the old IP address is cached somewhere in your system.
You might want to clear all cached web pages to be sure that there are no
old references around. In Tools, Internet Options, there is usually a
delete button which opens a dialog with a bunch of check boxes for the files
you want to delete. "Temporary Internet Files" are probably the guys you
want to get rid of. You can decide about the others. Deleting Cookies is
not always desireable as you may find that certain information that web
sites use to tailor themselves to your preferences are lost. If this
doesn't fix the problem, you may want to try clearing the DNS cache on your
computer. To do this, type at the run dialog

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

which might help. IPCONFIG is a program that runs within the command prompt
and it may just run and return you to Windows without displaying anything.

If the above does not work, I would start to get a little suspicious if I
were you. I would start to wonder if something is trapping your calls to
the internet. Please understand this does not necessarily have to be
malware, but it could be.

The first thing I would do is to check your proxy settings. This is a
common way that a third party can watch where you go on the web. There are
cases where proxy settings are required, and if you use any kind of web page
reformatters or safety filters they often use proxy settings. Still, this
could be causing accidental or intentional problems. If you are using
Internet Explorer, go to Tools, and Internet options.
Go to the Connections tab, and press the "LAN Settings" button. Look for
the check box that says to use a proxy server and make certain it is
unchecked. If it is checked, there should be a proxy server specified, and
knowing what that server is might provide you with a hint as to how it got
set up.

If the proxy server is not checked, you probably should check with your
internet service provider to be sure that you are using the correct Domain
Name Servers (DNS). These are usually assigned when you install a router
and such. Sometimes, though, if you change ISP's, old DNS settings remain
in your router, for example. If nothing else, by the time you try all of
this, the problem may resolve itself. <smile>

I need to access NFBNET fairly regularly, and I am not aware of any
particular problems with it being down, especially since we have switched it
to a virtual server. Therefore, I tend to think something above might be
happening in your system.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson
