[nfbcs] Varieties of Windows

Hi all,
I know people have a wide variety of experiences and opinions when it comes
to using versions of Windows and screen readers for that matter.

I am using three versions of Windows, and really haven't had difficulty with
any of them.
At work, I am using Windows 7 on a desktop with JAWS 15, a Braille display
and the K1000. At home, I have two laptops. My old HP Pavilion is running
Windows Vista, yes I know a lot of folks hate Vista, but it works well for
me.
I also went to Best Buy a few months ago and purchased an Acer laptop with a
touch screen running Windows 8. Again, Windows 8 works fine for me,and it
has been interesting to play around with the touch screen features in JAWS
15. I think the IOS and Voice Over combination is better at this point for
navigating the screen, but I'm anxious to see how things develop with JAWS.
To me, Windows 8 is designed more like a mobile platform, and I am used to
that since I use an iPad and iPhone.
Someone who is more technical than I am can explain this in better detail,
but you can customize Windows 8 so that it operates more like the older
versions of Windows that we are used to.
When I went to Best Buy, I sat down with some very helpful people from the
"geek squad" who helped me get everything set up. I brought my JAWS cd with
me,and explained that I wanted to make sure JAWS and Windows were working
properly before I left the store with the computer.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [nfbcs] Varieties of Windows

I'm getting ready to buy a new desktop computer. I had heard that Windows 8

was trash, so I've been looking at Windows 7. But I see there are people
here using Windows 8, so maybe it's actually OK?
Between Windows 7 and 8, which is the easiest to use, for a person using
Jaws and coming from XP?
Is there any real difference, from the same perspective, between Windows 7
for Home and Windows 7 Professional?
Thanks.
Tracy
