Tracy:

Yes, you'd have to close and restart JAWS even if you used a USB A/B switch.
After all, the switch only makes the task of changing the cable easier.
Physically/electrically, the same thing is happening whether you switch the
cable manually or flip the switch.

As for how well the switches work, I cannot say, having never used one.
However, I *can* tell you that using a USB star hub (a device for giving a
computer more USB ports than it was born with) can have adverse effects such
as changing timing which becomes critical when speech synthesizers are
exchanging information with screen-readers. My DECtalk USB got kind of flaky
due to timing issues when I put it on a star hub. I should think one would
experience the same sorts of problems with Braille displays.

Subject: [nfbcs] USB A/B switch

Has anyone tried a USB A/B switch with a braille display? It would be
handy, if I could connect my Alva to either of my computers, and switch on
the fly, but the reviews on Amazon of A/B switches said they were pretty
hit-and-miss. Also, when I turn off the Alva and move the cable, I have to
close and restart Jaws to make Jaws see the display again. Would the same
be true with the A/B switch?
Thanks.
Tracy
