[nfbcs] Windows 10 questions

Nicole,

My understanding is that what you say about automatic updates is correct for
the "core" version of Windows 10, the version one gets for free if one
updates from a "home" version, but that you have some control over updates
if you upgrade from a "professional" or "enterprise" edition. Like you, I
do have some uneasiness about forced automatic updates. However, I have
also had some difficulties with updates when I let a computer get too far
behind, and I can really think of only one update since the beginning of
Windows XP that caused me problems and I could work around that. Still, it
is good for us to be aware of this, and maybe even consider paying the $49
or so to upgrade to a higher level of Windows 10.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

As with everything new, I have read that it is better to wait a while. Also,
on Windows 10, updates will not be optional. So, if the update breaks
something in JAWS, you are stuck with it.

The FS page does have a link to a press release that says JAWS 16 (Version
0.4350 or higher) is compatible with Windows 10 and giving a link on how to
upgrade Windows when using FS products; how one upgrades depends upon the
Windows version one is upgrading from.
On one of the pages one can link to from David andrews' message on the
Promotion-Technology list it says that one can upgrade to Windows 10 for
free for a year starting July 29. Elsewhere, I've heard that it is
Microsoft's intent to allow free upgrades forever -- I believe I heard that
from an interview with a MS guy on KOMO.
I don't know if the upgrade itself can be voiced or not; I may call FS on
Monday to ask.

Hello, Jim. From what I understand, Windows 10 is ready to go with JAWS for
Windows, but there are some default changes that need to be made such as
using Internet Explorer instead of Microsoft's new replacement and
continuing to use your current email client, probably Outlook. I believe
that the Freedom Scientific page has specific instructions for upgrading and
those vary depending on whether or not you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8.

My understanding is that there will be no charge in upgrading to Microsoft
windows ten if you are a Windows 7 or eight user. I think they are not so
much interested in making money on this new release from old customers as
they are in being able to terminate legacy support on these older versions.
I don't know when support actually goes away for Windows 7 and Windows 8,
and although upgrading is certainly possible, there is some sentiment that
suggests that if you are going to buy a new computer soon, simply wait a
while and take advantage of the fresh installation that the new computer
will provide.

Others may have better information than I do.

Warmly,

Gary

Good morning,

It may be too soon to ask, but I know some of you guys probably have been
playing with or exploring already.
Has anyone successfully and independently installed and used Windows 10?
I've heard/read a couple of different things about not being able to install
it without Narrator or something along those lines.

Also, does anyone know about Windows 10 being free for a limited time before
we'd have to actually subscribe to it? I don't like that idea. What would
that mean...One day I wake up and my computer wouldn't work any more until I
pay money for the Windows service?
I'm a bit confused about that.

Thanks.
Jim
