Go to your college and ask the department what students use.  I am a fan of the Microsoft Surface Pro three computers.  You will have to use Microsoft Windows a great deal, and you can remotely login to other machines when you need those environments.

    I keep hearing people suggest switching to a mac, wouldn't it be hard to learn, and how hard is it to set up the vm for Windows 7?  I am not a computer techie just yet I'm pretty green.
