Three finger double tap will mute the speech while the Braille continues to display. By the way I have not noticed a delay in speech and Braille display so you may have something else going on.

We should be able to mute speech and have the same productivity. I have an iPad, but am considering purchasing a Surface Pro for that reason alone. At least it's based on the Windows platform and can run traditional screen readers. Just my rant for the day.
