Jim,

You should see what is being used for the email account and whether they are
using OUTLOOK.COM or possibly something else with IMAP.  If they are using
OUTLOOK.COM or one of the related Microsoft services like LIVE.COM or
possibly even HOTMAIL.COM, the mail is also stored on the server and Windows
Live Mail will read it from the server without using the PST files.  If they
are using another mail service like Gmail but are using IMAP, the same thing
is true, Windows Live mail will read the messages from the server as long as
it is also set up to use IMAP.  While I don't think Windows Live Mail will
read PST files directly, it seems to me there might be a way to export and
import, but I'm not sure of that.  Louis is right that you could burn up a
lot of time in a hurry.  However, if they keep their mail on a server
through one of the methods described above, Windows Live Mail should be able
to read it.

Thanks.  I appreciate that.  I would do it, but the person I'm helping isn't
in that position at this time.
I'm guessing by your answer that it will be challenging to read those PST
files?

Jim,

The simplest answer is to pay $99 a year an get a subscription to Office
365, then load the complete Office on to the computer.  You can load Office
onto up to five computers using this method.  You will lose more time trying
to row against the current than to just using the machine as it was designed
to be used.

Howdy,

 

I'm not sure of the answer to this question, so before I go experimenting
and problem solving on someone else's computer, I thought I'd ask the
experts.

 

I'm helping someone set up a laptop.  While it came with MS Office, it came
with the version that does not have Outlook on it.  I know that I can
install Windows Live mail, from Windows Live Essentials.  That's very
similar to Outlook.  I kind of think of it as the little brother to Outlook.

Anyway, if this person was using outlook on a different computer and was
able to get a PST file with all of his messages and contacts and such, would
it be possible to somehow load or import the stuff on to the new computer
and have Windows Live mail read it?

In doing a brief scan of Windows Live Mail, I'm not exactly sure how that
would be done.

If this is possible, are there any precautions I need to take?  Everything
is saved onto a thumb drive, so no danger there.  

I'm all for problem solving and experimenting, but when it's not my computer
and I'm helping someone else who doesn't have much patience or isn't very
facile with technology, I want to be careful and do things as well as
possible.
