Alternatively you can hold down alt and shift and use the right and left arrows

For me, only control+alt+1 through control+alt+3 will give me headings 1 through 3. To get heading levels 4 and beyond, I have to use the styles menu. I just highlight the text I want to be the heading and hit control+shift+s and then arrow down to heading 4, heading 5, or whatever, and press enter.
