Con música Latina llenando el Estudio D, y la instructora llevando el ritmo,
las parejas se tomaron de las manos mientras que se guíaban unos a otros, y
algunos lo hicieron a solas. Ésto es ConfiDance, brindando a las personas
ciegas una experiencia de alegría en el movimiento del baile.

El programa no lucrativo es una serie de cuatro lecciones de baile gratuítas
seguidas por una fiesta de celebración donde los bailarines demuestran sus
movimientos. Su primera lección de baile Latino fué el sábado, pero los
participantes tubieron muestreó de otros estilos en enero.

"La idea detrás de esto era establecer, mejorar y aumentar el amor propio,"
la profesora de baile, sheriff Osni dijo. Osni es una de dos instructoras
del baile quienes donaron su tiempo al programa que se llevaba a cabo en
Move Studio en Dallas.

Hsiao-Ling Dawson, que trabaja como niñera, organizó ConfiDance para
satisfacer un programa de requisito de liderazgo que pide hacer algo que
sirva a la comunidad.

"El baile es como una expresión. Mirar, o la visión no es necesaria,"
Aseguró.

Osni dirigió a los estudiantes con cuatro pasos Latinos familiares. KC and
The Sunshine Band's Get Down  Tonight transitaron con una consonancia
familiar a un ritmo extranjero. Osni utilizó el "rápido-rápidos lentos"y
uno-dos-tres" para mantener el compás. Los bailarines aprendieron los pasos,
y después se enparejaron con una pareja a fín de poner la cadencia Latina a
la música, a medida que Osni continuába expresando el ritmo.

"¿Cómo de caliente quieren ir, fuego siendo 10?" preguntó Osni a mitad del
camino de la lección.

"¡Fuego!" contestó Mark Marvel,  un residente de Garland, y presidente de
Blind Ambitions Groups, una organización no lucrativa que asiste a las
personas ciegas con deficiencias visuales a desarrollar sus capacidades.

Marvel dijo que Dawson vino a sus reuniones del grupo de apoyo en Garland,
Plano, y Dallas a fín de hablar acerca de ConfiDance. Ella visitó un número

invitarlas a su programa.

David y Debbie McKenzie de Garland han estado bailando desde que el programa
comenzó en enero. Esta fué su primera tentativa al baile Latino.

"No, (la cumbia), ése fué el más difícil, ese es donde usted se tuerce,"
David dijo mientras que él y Debbie comenzaron a bailar. "Ese fué difícil
para mí debído a que  me estába faltando un paso, pero aprenderemos."

"Nos tenemos uno a otro para practicar," Debbie dijo con una sonrisa.

Mientras que la hora venía a un cierre, los bailarines y los voluntarios
exploraron más con el movimiento del estilo libre, agregando vueltas e
inmersiones a sus pasos Latinos. Y entonces, con un floreo del mambo Número
5, y un fuerte aplauso, habían terminado.

La porción Latina de ConfiDance continúa a partir de la 1 a 2 de la tarde
los sábados en Move Studio, 17062 Preston Road. El día de la celebración es

Visually impaired hoofers strut their stuff with ConfiDance

With Latin music filling Studio D and the instructor keeping the tempo,
couples held hands as they
guided each other, while some flew solo. This is ConfiDance, giving the
visually impaired an
experience of the joy of movement through dance.
The nonprofit program is a series of four free dance lessons followed by a
celebration party where
dancers show off their moves. Their first Latin dance lesson was Saturday,
but participants had
sampled other styles in January.
"The idea behind it was to establish, improve and increase self-esteem,"
dance teacher Sheriff Osni
said. Osni is one of two dance instructors who donated their time to the
program taking place at
Dallas' Move Studio.
Hsiao-Ling Dawson, who works as a nanny, organized ConfiDance to fulfill a
leadership program
requirement that calls for doing something that serves the community.
"Dancing is like an expression. Seeing or vision is not necessary," she
said.
Osni guided the students through four familiar Latin steps. KC and The

Tonight transitioned dancers with a familiar tune to a foreign rhythm. Osni
used "quick-quick-slows"
and "one-two-threes" to keep the beat. Dancers learned the steps and then
paired with a partner to
put the Latin cadence to music as Osni continued to voice the rhythm.
"How hot do you want to go, ‘fuego' being 10?" asked Osni midway through the
lesson.
"Fuego!" replied Mark Marvel, a Garland resident and president of Blind
Ambitions Groups, a
nonprofit organization that assists blind and visually impaired people to
develop their abilities.
Marvel said Dawson came to their support group meetings in Garland, Plano
and Dallas to talk about
ConfiDance. She visited a number of organizations geared toward assisting
the visually impaired to
invite them to her program.
David and Debbie McKenzie of Garland have been dancing since the program
started in January. This
was their first attempt at Latin dancing.
"The hardest step for me was the last one," Debbie said.
"No, the (cumbia), that was the hardest one, that's where you twist," David
said as he and Debbie
started to dance. "That was hard for me because I kept missing a step, but
we'll learn."
"We got each other for practicing," Debbie said with a smile.
As the hour came to a close, dancers and volunteers explored more with
freestyle movement, adding
turns and dips to their Latin steps. And then, with a flourish of Mambo No.
5 and a round of
applause, it was over.
"After this, you deserve your tequila at On The Border," Osni told them.
The Latin portion of ConfiDance continues from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturdays at Move
Studio, 17062 Preston
Road. Celebration Day is 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 21.
