Baltimore, Maryland (3 de mayo 2010): La Federación Nacional de
Ciegos (NFB), la organización más grande de personas ciegas en los Estados
Unidos, anunció hoy que su presidente, el Doctor Marc Maurer,
recibirá un grado de doctorado honorario en leyes, de la Universidad de
Carolina del Sur, al Norte del Estado, en la ceremonia del 2010 que comenzó
el 4 de mayo del 2010.



El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos,
dijo: "Me siento muy contento por el privilegio de recibir un grado de
doctorado honorario
de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur, al Norte del Estado. Cómo presidente
de la
organización más grande de personas ciegas en los Estados Unidos, he
tenido la suerte de jugar un papél en muchos desarrollos exitantes de vida
cambiante
para las personas ciegas en Norte América. Si bien hemos hecho muchos
avances, aún queda mucho por hacer. Sólo el 10 por ciento de los
niños ciegos están aprendiendo Braille en este país, y directamente, esto
contribuye a una tasa de 70 por ciento de desempleo entre las personas
ciegas en
los Estados Unidos. Acepto humildemente este premio en nombre de

Maurer obtuvo su licenciatura en Derecho, de la Universidad de Indiana en
1977, y
comenzó a centrarse en representación de las personas ciegas en los
tribunales. Un
miembro del bar en Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, y el Colegio de
Abogados de
la Corte Suprema, Maurer es uno de los abogados con más experiencia en
el campo de los derechos civiles y la discriminación contra las personas
ciegas.

Maurer ha sido presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos
desde 1986. En esa capacidad, se unió al presidente George W. Bush en

2009, el Doctor Maurer fué galardonado con el Premio de Rev. John J.
Cavanaugh, C.S.C.,
