La Federación Nacional de Ciegos Exhorta al Congreso a Rechazar Comercialización de Paradas de Descanso

 La Enmienda de Ley de Transporte, Amenaza a los Medios de Subsistencia de Cientos de Empresarios Ciegos
Baltimore, Maryland (14 de febrero del 2012): La Federación Nacional de Ciegos, la organización más antigua y más grande a nivel nacional de estadounidenses ciegos, instó hoy al Congreso de los Estados Unidos a rechazar una enmienda propuesta a la Ley de Infraestructura de Energía y empleo Estadounidense American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act, del 2012 (H.R. 7) que permitiría la comercialización de Paradas de Descanso en las carreteras. En la actualidad, la única actividad comercial permitida en tales paradas de descanso, es el funcionamiento de las máquinas expendedoras por parte de empresarios ciegos bajo la Ley de Randolph-Sheppard.

El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos, dijo: "Esta enmienda pondría en peligro el sustento de cientos de empresarios ciegos en los Estados Unidos, que dependen de los ingresos de las máquinas expendedoras de las paradas de descanso. Con una tasa de desempleo entre los estadounidenses ciegos que supera el 70 por ciento, tal movimiento es profundamente irresponsable, ya que estos empresarios van a perder sus negocios y se verán obligados a depender de la asistencia pública. Instamos al Congreso a rechazar esta propuesta irreflexiva e imprudente."

La enmienda, #217, ha sido presentada por los congresistas Steve LaTourette, Representante de Ohio, (R-OH), Steve Stivers Representante de Ohio, (R-OH), y Dennis Kucinich del Distrito de Ohio, (D-OH). El Comité de la Cámara, Relativo a las Normas, se espera, que voten más tarde el día de hoy para permitir o no permitir la enmienda.

National Federation of the Blind Urges Congress 
to Reject Commercializing Rest Stops
Transportation Bill Amendment Threatens Livelihood of Hundreds of Blind Entrepreneurs
Baltimore, Maryland (February 14, 2012): The National Federation of the Blind, the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans, today urged the United States Congress to reject an amendment to the proposed American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012 (H.R. 7) that would allow the commercialization of highway rest stops.  Currently, the only commercial activity permitted at such rest stops is the operation of vending machines by blind entrepreneurs under the Randolph-Sheppard Act.

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: "This amendment would threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of blind entrepreneurs in the United States who depend on revenue from rest stop vending machines.  With an unemployment rate among blind Americans that exceeds 70 percent, such a move is deeply irresponsible, as these entrepreneurs will lose their businesses and be forced to rely on public assistance.  We urge Congress to reject this ill-considered and reckless proposal."

The amendment, #217, has been put forward by Congressmen Steve LaTourette (R-OH), Steve Stivers (R-OH), and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).  The House Committee on Rules is expected to vote later today on whether to allow the amendment.
