En el 2012, el Centro Nacional para Jóvenes Ciegos en la Ciencia, National Center for Blind Youth in Science (NCBYS), un programa del Instituto Jernigan de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos, está introduciendo un programa de ciencia entusiasmante para los estudiantes de 7 a 11 años de edad, y de 14 a 18 años de edad, llamado, El Proyecto de Innovación, Project Innovation. Este programa pionero se centrará en fomentar el sentido de la innovación y la autonomía de los jóvenes estudiantes, ya que les permite determinar su curso de estudio durante la semana del programa. Los estudiantes, en última instancia, se centrarán en una investigación que se presentará en el Innovators Expo. Sin embargo, múltiples ramas de la ciencia serán exploradas a través del programa, a través de actividades de extensión. 
Un componente único del Proyecto de Innovación de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos, NFB Project Innovation, es cómo se va a servir a dos grupos de edad únicos, de manera simultánea. El primero de estos dos grupos estará integrado por los estudiantes en los grados 3-6 (edades 7-11). Este grupo, denominado innovadores Menores, Junior Innovators, se quedará en el Instituto Jernigan de la Federación,NFBJI, durante tres días, desde el 25 hasta el 29 de julio. **  Veinte estudiantes ciegos serán aceptados en este grupo.  Cada estudiante deberá asistir con un acompañante adulto. En este grupo, los estudiantes van a interactuar con profesionales de las ciencias, los mentores ciegos, e Innovadores Mayores. Tendrán la oportunidad de mostrar sus innovaciones finales, que reflejan sus propios intereses personales y de investigación, en  el Innovators Expo. 

Los estudiantes de secundaria, llamados innovadores Mayores, Senior Innovators, se desempeñarán como asesores menores. No sólo participarán en este programa de la ciencia, sino que modelarán habilidades de la ceguera, las habilidades de investigación científica, y las técnicas a sus contrapartes más jóvenes. también tendrán la oportunidad de exhibir en el Innovators Expo. Los estudiantes en los grados 9-12 (edades 14-18) son elegibles para solicitar, a fín de  ser un Innovador Mayor, Senior Innovator. Los Innovadores Mayores, Senior Innovators, se alojarán en el Instituto Jernigan de la Federación, NFBJI, durante cuatro días, desde el 24 hasta el 29 de julio   del 2012. ** Diez estudiantes ciegos serán aceptados en este grupo.  
Habrá una cuota de $250 por cada par de Innovador Menor con Acompañante, y una cuota de $250 por cada Innovador Mayor para asistir. Otros gastos, tales como los gastos de viaje, alojamiento, comida y materiales del programa, serán cubiertos por el Instituto Jernigan de la Federación, para todos los estudiantes y pares de estudiantes acompañantes.

  In 2012, the National Center for Blind Youth in Science (NCBYS), a program of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, is introducing an exciting science program for students ages 7-11 and 14-18 called NFB Project Innovation.  This pioneer program will focus on fostering a sense of innovation and autonomy in young students by allowing them to determine their course of study during the week of the program. Students will ultimately focus on one investigation which they will showcase at the Innovators Expo. However, multiple branches of science will be explored throughout the program through extension activities.

  A unique component of NFB Project Innovation is how it will serve two unique age groups simultaneously. The first of these two groups will be comprised of students in grades 3-6 (ages 7-11).  This group, called Junior Innovators, will stay at the NFBJI for three days, July 25-29.**  Twenty blind students will be accepted into this group.  Each student will be required to attend with an adult chaperone. In this age group, students will interact with science professionals, blind mentors, and Senior Innovators. They will have the opportunity to show off their final innovations, which reflect their own personal interests and research, at the Innovators Expo. 

  The high school students, called Senior Innovators, will serve as junior advisors.  They will not only participate in this science program but will model blindness skills, scientific investigation skills, and techniques to their younger counterparts. Senior Innovators will also have the opportunity to exhibit at the Innovators Expo. Students in grades 9-12 (ages 14-18) are eligible to apply to be a Senior Innovator.  The Senior Innovators will stay at the NFBJI for four days, July 24-29, 2012.**  Ten blind students will be accepted into this group.

  There will be a $250 fee for each Junior Innovator/Chaperone pair and a $250 fee for each Senior Innovator attending. Other expenses, such as the cost of travel, room, board, and program materials, will be covered by the NFB Jernigan Institute for all students and student/chaperone pairs.
