Hace Comentarios Sobre el Veredicto en Contra de Henry’s Turkey Service

Baltimore, Maryland (2 de mayo del 2013):  La Federación Nacional de Ciegos
comentó hoy sobre el veredicto de 240 millones de dólares otorgados por un jurado de Iowa a los ex empleados con discapacidad del Henry’s Turkey Service.

El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos dijo: “"La Federación Nacional de Ciegos felicita a la Comisión de Igualdad de Oportunidades en el Empleo, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, por la obtención de este importante veredicto, y felicitamos al jurado por el reconocimiento de la igual dignidad y valor de los trabajadores con discapacidad.  El jurado de este caso ha enviado un fuerte mensaje de que la explotación de los Estadounidenses con discapacidades es moralmente reprobable, y los responsables deben ser castigados".

Entre otras formas de explotación y abuso, a los empleados del Henry’s Turkey Service se les pagó sólo cuarenta y un centavos de dólar por hora.  A más de cuatrocientos mil otros trabajadores Estadounidenses con discapacidades se les paga menos que el salario mínimo federal. Bajo la ley actual, los pagos salariales por debajo del salario mínimo a los trabajadores con discapacidad son legales en virtud de una exención en la Ley de Normativas Justas Salariales, Fair Labor Standards Act.  La Federación Nacional de Ciegos y más de cincuenta organizaciones de personas con discapacidad están tratando de eliminar esta práctica discriminatoria, mediante el apoyo a la Ley de Salarios Justos para los trabajadores con discapacidad, Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act, del 2013, H.R. 831.

National Federation of the Blind Comments 
on Verdict Against Henry’s Turkey Service

Baltimore, Maryland (May 2, 2013): The National Federation of the Blind commented today on a $240 million verdict awarded by an Iowa jury to disabled former employees of Henry’s Turkey Service.

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: “The National Federation of the Blind congratulates the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for obtaining this important verdict, and we commend the jury for recognizing the equal dignity and value of workers with disabilities.  The jury in this case has sent a strong message that the exploitation of Americans with disabilities is morally reprehensible and those responsible must be punished.”

Among other forms of exploitation and abuse, the Henry’s Turkey Service employees were paid only forty-one cents per hour.  Over four hundred thousand other American workers with disabilities are paid less than the federal minimum wage.  Under current law, subminimum wage payments to workers with disabilities are legal under an exemption in the Fair Labor Standards Act.  The National Federation of the Blind and over fifty other organizations of people with disabilities are seeking to phase out this discriminatory practice by supporting the Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act of 2013, H.R. 831.
