ORGANIZATION OF THE BLIND TO HOST BOWLING SOCIAL

It is unfortunate that the images of blindness often portray either a helpless blind person unable to perform the simplest task or of the blind person endowed with superhuman powers to compensate for their loss of eyesight. The truth is that blind people, as a group, are no less functional or no more gifted than the average sighted person. Blind people can do most of the things the average sighted person can, and do them as well! This includes bowling!

The East Hillsborough Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is inviting blind and visually impaired people of all ages to join them for a morning of one of America's favorite indoor sports! With the cooperation of Oakfield Lanes, the NFB will host a social bowling activity on Saturday, August 8 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. The special cost for bowling will be only $2.00 per game plus $2.00 for shoe rental. Oakfield Lanes is located at 1001 Oakfield Drive in Brandon and provides rails for blind bowlers. The Federation will offer instruction to anyone who wants to learn to bowl using non-visual techniques. In addition, any person who is blind or visually impaired will be given an order form to receive a free white cane compliments of the National Federation of the Blind. RSVPs are requested in order to ensure enough lanes! A brief Chapter meeting will be held before bowling. For more information about the blind bowling activity, the free white cane offer, or help and support with issues of blindness, please contact

The National Federation of the Blind is the oldest and largest organization of the blind in the United States. The Federation provides scholarships to blind students, support for those who are blind or losing their eyesight, advocacy for the blind and educational programs for the general public on topics of blindness. The NFB is not an organization that speaks on behalf of the blind; we are the blind speaking for ourselves. More information about blindness and the National Federation of the Blind is available at our website
