Maybe so, but I think on some level he regretted the heck out of having to
go to war, and it is true that he wanted to give the South lenient terms of
surrender after the war was over.

Maybe he was just happy to be kicking the sh... out of the Rebs, since it
was a Federal Holiday and not a CSA one! LOL! I hope you all had a wonderful
Thanksgiving! KH

I thought about that very thing! Maybe President Lincoln realized that even
with all the problems, our country still had a lot to be thankful for.

It's interesting that the first Thanksgiving proclamation was written during
a time of the bloodiest war this nation had seen up to that time, a war
which tested the very fabric and political values of the country and which
resulted in something like 625,000 casualties. I'm not sure what that says,
but it's interesting.

I want to wish everyone on the list a very joyous and happy Thanksgiving.
Here's some Thanksgiving trivia.

                        RANDOM TIDBITS

The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, to
commemorate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after
a harsh winter. In that year Governor William Bradford
proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The colonists celebrated
it as a traditional English harvest feast, to which they
invited the local Wampanoag Indians.

During the mid-1800s, poet and editor Sarah J. Hale began
lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. In 1863
President Abraham Lincoln gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation,
declaring the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving.

At one time, the turkey and the bald eagle were each
considered as the national symbol of America. Benjamin
Franklin was one of those who argued passionately on behalf
of the turkey. Franklin felt the turkey, although "vain and
silly", was a better choice than the bald eagle, whom he
felt was "a coward".
