Yes, and those can either make or break you. But there is something in the
individual himself or herself, something about how that person responds to
those circumstances, that also makes that determination about greatness.
Lincoln responded very differently than, let's say, Warren G. Harding might
have done if placed in the same circumstances.

Mark, many of us think of him as their favorite President. He was a very
wise man! However, I think what makes many in History great are the
circumstancess in which they are surrounded with during their moment in
time! KH

And it's interesting that President Lincoln, in spite of his having an
incredible burden that I can't imagine anyone carrying without cracking
placed on his shoulders, still had faith and, if anything, grew morally
stronger during the Civil War. He was still able to express faith in God
and express thanks in spite of all of this. Those are some of the reasons I
think of him as my favorite president.

I thought about that very thing! Maybe President Lincoln realized that even
with all the problems, our country still had a lot to be thankful for.

It's interesting that the first Thanksgiving proclamation was written during
a time of the bloodiest war this nation had seen up to that time, a war
which tested the very fabric and political values of the country and which
resulted in something like 625,000 casualties. I'm not sure what that says,
but it's interesting.

I want to wish everyone on the list a very joyous and happy Thanksgiving.
Here's some Thanksgiving trivia.

                        RANDOM TIDBITS

The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, to
commemorate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after
a harsh winter. In that year Governor William Bradford
proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The colonists celebrated
it as a traditional English harvest feast, to which they
invited the local Wampanoag Indians.

During the mid-1800s, poet and editor Sarah J. Hale began
lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. In 1863
President Abraham Lincoln gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation,
declaring the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving.

                             ***

At one time, the turkey and the bald eagle were each
considered as the national symbol of America. Benjamin
Franklin was one of those who argued passionately on behalf
of the turkey. Franklin felt the turkey, although "vain and
silly", was a better choice than the bald eagle, whom he
felt was "a coward".
