Accessible World you and your guide dog, presents the guide dog in the

family, wednesday, march 9, 2011

Newswire:

When a new addition becomes part of the family, dynamics change. New

considerations and questions arise. The blending of humans and animals

brings its own set of issues never faced before. Guide dogs and other

animals need time to adjust to their new surroundings and learn the lay of

the land and their place in it. Each new guide brings with its coming, new

and exciting possibilities for different adventures and experiences. Should

you rush to make your new family member feel at home by showering him with

attention and affection, or would your new friend and team member like some

quiet time before embarking on the busy family life of which you are all a

part? Are there tips that can help you divide time between family, dog, and

friends that can make this transition easier? Guide dogs add a touch of

fun, security, and warmth to family life.

But how do they fit in the lives of families with children?

The balance of meeting each family member's needs, creating positive

interactions, and maintaining individual space to thrive will be the topic

of this week's show.

Join us with our guests Ron and Lisa Brooks who have two guide dogs, one

retired guide, and three children under the age of nine. Join the discussion

to ask questions and learn how this Phoenix-based family handles the

challenges of balancing work and family, traveling with children, schools

and the public perceptions of life with dog guides and kids.
