Press Release

MV Transportation Partners with TARC to Host 5th Annual Louisville White Cane Safety Day

Fairfield, Calif., October 3, 2011 – Today, MV Transportation and TARC announced the 5th Annual Louisville White Cane Safety Day will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2011 from Noon – 2:00 p.m., again at Fourth Street Live in the heart of downtown Louisville.

White Cane Day focuses on educating local motorists about the significance of a white cane in an effort to improve safety for Louisville’s large community of persons who are blind or visually impaired. The event will begin with opening remarks followed by white cane street-crossing demonstrations. Blind and visually impaired citizens will demonstrate how effectively and competently blind citizens can cross a busy intersection with the use of their skills, guide dogs and/or white canes.

Local supporters of the event include MV Transportation, TARC, Metro Government, Greater Louisville Council of the Blind, Metro Disability Coalition, Kentucky Office of the Blind, Visually Impaired Persons of Louisville (V.I.P.) and other members of the community. MV is the contracted by TARC for the operation TARC’s paratransit service.

“MV Transportation is glad to host this event in the Louisville community for the fifth year in a row. Not only does this event align with the company’s mission to provide freedom of mobility, but it supports the Louisville community which we are honored to serve,” said Kevin A. Klika MV Transportation COO/President.

White Cane Day originates from a 1964 joint resolution of the U.S. Congress honoring the many achievements of blind and visually impaired Americans. This resolution authorizes the President of the United States to proclaim October 15 each year as White Cane Safety Day. The proclamation emphasizes the significance of the use of the white cane as a tool providing freedom of mobility for the visually impaired and celebrates the white cane as a symbol of this independence.
