Paul Ryan Chosen as Republican VP Pick
This week, Mitt Romney announced that he had chosen Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) as his running mate in the upcoming Presidential election. Medicare and Medicaid Become Prime Election Issues
After the announcement of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate in the November election, entitlement programs have become front and center in the campaign. Ryan’s (R-WI) previous proposed cuts to both Medicare and Medicaid programs will influence the election and will most likely, bring disability issues to the forefront of the campaign. Kansas State officials announced this week that they will change the way they determine which in-home Medicaid services will be provided to people with disabilities and people who are aging. The system that is currently in place will become a system that relies on only one agency or organization in each county to deliver services. Read more about the upcoming changes from KHI News Service.
Democratic State Senators from Maine Oppose Medicaid Cuts
As we reported last week, the Governor Paul LePage of Maine asked his state to remove almost 30,000 low-income Medicaid patients from the state-run program. This week, Democratic State Senators wrote a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius opposing the plan. The letter disputes the Governor’s argument that Medicaid cuts are needed due to a state budget crisis. Learn more from the Kennebec Journal.
