Sherri,

The vibrating cane that you tried was most certainly not the same one as was
created in India. I listened to the video and learned that the one in India
isn'at actually a vibrating cane at all. It is a device that attaches to
the cane so even if the cane were broken it could be removed by the user and
put on a new cane. I don't think you had to keep the cane tip off the
ground. I would really like to have the chance to buy one of these cool
sounding devices but sadly I won't get the chance since they most likely
won't be coming to the United States.

Thanks,
Jim

I tried one too at an NFBF convention. It was very short and yes, you
couldn't touch the ground with it. It would not have worked for me either.

I don't know if I would want a vibrating cane. A local man (Putnam County)
created one and has been trying to sell it. He had me sample it a couple of
years ago. I took it to Walmart. It vibrated whenever it got close to
something and it could not be placed directly on the floor. I had to hold
it up off of the floor a certain amount of inches. It was also not easy to
hold in my hand. Heavier than a white cane. Also, they told me that the
sequences of the vibrations were different to tell you when you were near a
curb, someone, and etc...I couldn't tell the difference. I told the guy it
was a nice idea but it wasn't for me.

Dear Friends,
The article about the "vibrating cane" might be of interest to some, but
what caught my attention on this message that came into my In Box was:
"Around 12 million people are living with blindness in India, the largest
number for any country in the world."
That is a lot of people even though I did a Google search and it showed -
1.25 billion (2013)!

Vibrating cane to help blind people
Vibrating cane to help blind people

A team of scientists in Delhi has developed a smart cane for blind people,
which uses sensors to give vibration feedback.

Around 12 million people are living with blindness in India, the largest
number for any country in the world.

Priced at under $50 (£30), the hope is that the smart cane can help people
in developing countries.

The BBC's Shilpa Kannan met Bharti Kalra, a teacher who has been using the
cane, and Professor Balakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Technology in
Delhi, who is one of the developers.
