[Nfbf-l] Convention trip

Hey Sherri.

Lynx actually did pretty well for me getting back and forth to the hotel.
Actually the biggest problem I had was when I got back to the Greyhound for
my return to Daytona. I needed to make a bathroom stop and the station
agent violated some cardinal rules about dealing with the blind, despite
that I was wearing an NFB shirt and still wearing my convention name tag, so
everything was screaming that I am blind,. The agent guided me to the
bathroom but when I stopped at the toilet, he picked up my cane and computer
bag without saying a word. I had to hunt my way back to the front door of
the bathroom to find him waiting at the door with both items. It would have
been better for him to leave the cane and bage with me so I would know where
they were when I was done. For all I knew, they could have been sstolen.

Otherwise it was a good trip. I joined the Communities in Faith division
and participated in some tactile art, learning how to make tactile drawings
and discussing other forms of art and how this could interface with
technology. I also attended the first day of general session.

This experience gives me a little more confidence as it was the first time I
used paratransit in another community. I feel apprehension sometimes when I
encounter new things like this, as I have to work through social issues with
it. It's the same issue that holds me back from using services like Uber or
Lyft, or apps like Be My Eyes, the fact of what we were all taught about
stranger danger. I hope we will be able to work together on some of those
hurdles.

God bless.

Bill, sorry to get back with you after convention. Lynx is pretty similar
to other paratransit systems and riding with them is always an adventure. I
hope all went well for you.

Sherri

Hi, list.

I have a few questions about managing my trip to convention. I am planning
to be there from 7/4-6, taking Greyhound to and from Daytona Beach.

I have arranged for service with Lynx paratransit, but having never done
this in another community I have concerns, as I would be dealing with
unfamiliar people and situations. I do have the phone number for Lynx so
that is a start.

Can anyone familiar with the Orlando system fill me in on things that will
make this run smoothly.
