[Nfbf-l] Issue on faith committees

randrcook at gmail.com randrcook at gmail.com
Wed Sep 12 15:13:09 UTC 2018

What is the purpose of the NFB? Should religion be included in any
committee? Should religion or politics identifying certain religions be
part of the NFB agenda?

As an individual that has resigned from my local chapter, I am very
concerned about these issues. Discussions, prayer meeting and groups
discussing faith in any form usually becomes orverrun with one religion.

If you wish to discuss groups that do not treat the visually impaired as
equal, then it does not have to be called a faith meeting.

This can end up be uncomfortable to others. It can take away from the
purpose of equality in the NFB. I am probably in the minority on this topic,
however I feel very strongly about this. I would like to hear other
opinions on this topic. Please respong to this without fear of retaliation
on any side.

Hello,

Please find attached a great new POD Cast that was just launched by fellow
blind parent, Mary Joe Thorpe-Hartle. I thought this would be great to
share with you all. In addition, she has another episode on pregnancy and
interviewed two financial women. So, if you have time, please listen to
both recordings and stay tune for more to come from Mary Joe.

In addition, our national group, Blind Parents Connect will be releasing our
POD Cast n the near future, so please be on the look out for more details.
If there are any topics that you would like to see us cover specifically,
please reach out to me and share your ideas.

Dean raises a valid point. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints and rather than being welcomed, my faith was ridiculed. I
was accused of not being a Christian. I got off the e-mail list and have
not been to another meeting. This is shortly after the group started. We
should, as Denise says, be all inclusive. I hope their stand has changed.

Hi Merry,

Thanks so much for the terrific news that Congressman Curbelo has signed
onto ATAA, (HR 1734).

As a point of information, I checked on the bills status using the website:
www.congress.gov, and learned the following:

The bill currently has 84 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, of
which 10 are in Florida.

The list of Florida co-sponsors, and there House districts is as follows:

Bilirakis - (12)
Curbelo - (26)
Demmings - (10)
Gaetz - (1)
Hastings - (20)
Lawson - (5)
Mast - (18)
Posey - (8)
Ros-Lehtinen - (27)
Soto - (9)

I encourage everyone to review the above list. If your representative is
listed consider that to be a wonderful thing, and consider calling their
office or emailing them to say how much we appreciate their support. If your
representative is not listed, (and 17 reps. In Florida are not), contacting
them to ask for support on HR 1734 is vital. If we somehow managed to get
the remaining reps. In Florida to sign on as co-sponsors, we would most
likely propel the bill out of committee, and move it towards a vote by the
full House. Wouldn't that be amazing, and wouldn't that show how important
Florida is in terms of legislation that truly matters.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read my little note,

Russ Davis,

Fellow Federationists:

195 The Globe, the station which brought you the
stream of the 2018 NFB national convention, is
proud to bring you an exclusive interview with
special guest Michael Hingson, well-known for his
survival of the September 11 attacks along with
his guide dog Roselle, as told in his 2010 book
"Thunder Dog." In this wide-ranging interview,
Mike talks about his 9/11 story, his personal
background, and how the philosophy of the
National Federation of the Blind has shaped both
his attitudes toward blindness and the approach
he took during his walk down 78 floors of the
burning World Trade Center-an approach which
saved his life and the lives of others. He also
shares some lessons from September 11 which he
feels our community as well as the public
at-large should take to heart. This interview is
one which promises to stimulate and inspire you as you listen.

Our interview with Mike will air tomorrow,
September 11, on The Blind Side, a program hosted
by Chris Nusbaum which focuses on issues of
interest to the blind community. You can tune
into the show starting at 8:00 PM Eastern by
visiting 195theglobe.com, searching for 195 The
Globe in the TuneIn and ooTunes apps, or telling
your Alexa or Google device to play 195 The

Their stand has not changed, as I described in my message.

Denise, I know you believe that the Federation is all about diversity, but
this diversity can be expressed in one of two ways: If religion is to be a
topic, then give equal voice to all faiths. Or, religion should not be a
topic at all. I am now hearing of chapter newsletters required that
passages from the Bible be included. If you're going to do that, then those
passages need to alternate with passages from the Qur'an, the Bhagavad Gita
and the Baha'i Writings.

It has been brought to my attention that we have several individuals who
would love attend our meeting but our meeting is conflicting with the Death
Blind Division Meeting. I want all who wish to be apart of our group to be
able to attend.
