The Florida affiliate has lost one of our cornerstone of our Def/Blind
advocate .

Joe and Arlene were one of a kind and they will never be forgotten. Alene's
feistiness, and Joe's dedication to the federation made them the perfect
couple that made convention so much fun.

We need to continue the legacy of the Def/Blind Scholarship in remembrance
of our friends.

Rest in Peace Arlene. Joe is happy to have you once again by his side.

Jorge Hernandez

Joe and Arlene were always strong, enthusiastic, involved,
and dedicated to the work of the Federation. On a personal note, they were
also very supportive of my work within the Federation.

I remember one specific incident clearly etched in my memory
of Joe and Arlene. A blind radio announcer, Tim Stewart, had an interview
with a radio station that billed itself as "The Winners News Network" in Ft.
Lauderdale. They were very impressed with his resume and his press package.
But when they found out he was blind, they cancelled the interview.

It just so happened this radio station was hosting a
"Winners Convention" in Ft. Lauderdale, so I organized a group of
Federationists and held a rally outside the venue. We had about fifty of us
chanting and passing out flyers about the discrimination. We watched as many
of these people turned around and left! Joe and Arlene were responsible for
organizing those in the SE Florida region, as they then lived in Ft.
Lauderdale.

After the rally, a large group of us went to the Naulty's
for a barbecue and pool party. Joe showed off his Model T he was restoring
in his garage!

God speed, Arlene! Give our best to Joe!
