National Federation of the Blind of Michigan Board Meeting

September 29, 2011 Minutes.

Quorum Terri Wilcox, Larry Posont, Marcus Simmons, Donna Posont, Dave Robinson, and Mary Wurtzel.   

Secretary's Report, Terri Wilcox. The September 8 Minutes were sent out via email. Elizabeth Mohnke asked that a correction be made so that the Minutes stated that a link was available for Registration on the NFB of Michigan List. Dave Robinson moved to adopt the Secretary's Report. Marcus Simmons seconded the motion. The Secretary's Report was approved. 

Treasurer's Report, Mary Wurtzel. The accounts contain the same amounts as they did during the last meeting. The President approved money to send out State Convention Flyers.

Introduction of participating Members.

President's Report, Larry Posont. Blast was an excellent conference with fifteen blind citizens of Michigan attending. Excellent information was available for all small business owners and vending operators. The division of Blind Merchants has grown. Over six hundred registered for the Conference. State Convention is coming together nicely and being advertised. A veteran from Oakland County is attending State Convention. He is being denied custody of his kids because of his blindness. Larry Posont will attend the State American Council of the Blind Convention as a Commission Board Member. At the end of next week, the Agenda will be laid out. Someone from Leader Dog will speak at Convention. 

State Convention, Update. A continental breakfast is a part of the hotel stay. The hotel restaurant is not open for lunch. This challenge of lunch at the hotel is being solved.

 Dianna Mohnke may help with child care. The Kalamazoo Chapter is having a social after the Seminars on Friday evening. The donation and door prize flyer is available via the NFB of Michigan list serve.

The Merchants will have a Seminar on Friday. Registration at 9:30 and the Seminar begins at 10:00. Two training sessions will be available. One session on Robert's Rules of Order and one on the Rights of an Operator will be offered. A round table discussion and business meeting will follow the training sessions.  

Web Page Registration. We need the registration to be available on the web page. Peter Zaremba is taking care of this. Thank you Peter!

Deadlines for Registration and Banquet before prices go up. October 21 is the deadline before prices rise. October 20 is the deadline for the hotel. No scholarships will be awarded because no students applied. A President for the Student Division is needed. All Agenda items, including items for the Student Seminar need to be given to Larry Posont.  

If we do not hear from Brunhilde Merck-Adam the parent's seminar will be canceled.

Newsline Update. The Commission Board voted to have the Agency fund Newsline for five years. The Commission for the Blind has unspent case services money. The commission owes $8,000 or 9,000 for Newsline funding for 2011. Scott White is writing proposals for Newsline.  

Commission for the Blind Board Meeting, September 15-16, Update. Lydia Schuck was the Chair on Thursday and John Scott on Friday. The bylaws were changed. The public has one more minute for Public Comment. The Commission Board must be independent from the Directors Office. Larry Posont was named as Vice chair. The time taken for Administrative Reports needs to be reduced. Attorney General's Office says the Board is a policy making entity. Public Comment is now written verbatim into the Minutes of the Commission Board Meeting.

Monitoring Report. Pat Cannon sends a report saying he has heard nothing.

The Members at Large Chapter will have a conference call, Saturday, October 1, at  11:00. A Chapter at Large meeting will be held at State Convention to elect officers and go over bylaws. The Solicitation License was previously sought.

Old Business: The Lansing Chapter is going to have a Meet and Greet outside the Capitol each Wednesday in October. Gere Wilcox had hip replacement surgery. Karen Simmons broke her replacement hip. Her rotator cuff was also injured. She is out of Commission for a month. 

A motion was made to adjourn at 9:40 P.M. Mary Wurtzel made the motion and it was seconded by Dave Robinson.
