Statement from Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) for the 24th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):

US Capitol

"The annual celebrations taking place across the country commemorating the historic signing of the ADA come at a time when the achievements of the disability

advocacy community have much to be encouraged about. Just in the last year, we have seen national legislation such as the reauthorization of the Workforce

and Innovation Opportunities Act signed by the President, a new mandate for federal contractors to ensure 7 percent of their workers are people with disabilities,

and here in Michigan, the legislature finally removed the use of

the R-word in state statutes.

"Although it is a time to celebrate the achievements the disability community has made in the last year, it is also time to renew our commitment to continuing

the fight for equal opportunity, treatment and respect of all people with disabilities. Employment of people with disabilities earning fair and prevailing

wage alongside individuals without disabilities in fully integrated settings is the next hurdle we in the disability community must tackle.

"MPAS, in collaboration with other disability advocates in the state, is calling on Michigan to adopt legislation that will help lay the foundation upon

which a productive, valued workforce of individuals with disabilities can be built. Significant advancements related to employment for people with disabilities

are already happening across the country and we are excited to be championing this issue here in Michigan."
