Subject: Thanks for a job well done!!

Greetings Everyone,

Well! It is official at last!! We have saved Governor Morehead and Newsline.
I want to thank each one of you who helped in these two efforts.

I have really enjoyed working with all of you on this.

I have made new friends and renewed old friendships. I got to follow Linda
Gunter and Marj Forman, NCAE lobbyist around the Legislative Building and
watch how they transformed their teaching skills into lobbying skills. It
has been neat meeting so many of our States Legislators. Evening hearing
them speak on the news has been fun because I got to match voices to names
on my list.

Now that we have reached our goal we really can't kick back and rest on our
laurels. We need to stay alert. The next task is to help make the school a
more effective part of the educational services offered to blind students.
There will be other battles along the way also--to make newsline an
automatically renewing item of the budget each year. Every time left turn on
red rears it's ugly head, we must work to defeat it. In other words we can't
be caught napping.

Linda Gunter is going to give me a list of things that we can do all year to
keep our Legislators aware of our presence. I'll pass them along to you. One
thing we can begin doing right away is building our network. I need a blind
person or a sighted person who understands the needs of blind people in each
house and senatorial district through out the state. This will be important
when issues arise because Legislators really love to hear from the folks
back home.

I think of working with the Legislature as being kind of like some kind of
ball game. When the "ball" is in your section of the court (your district)
then you act. If your state senator or representative is a major player than
you need to be ready to go into action.

There will also be times when everyone needs to act. Other times we need to
be in a holding pattern--voting, campaigning or doing other things that
will keep us in the minds of our representatives.

I will bring this epistle to a close for now. Please let me hear from you if
you are willing to be a part of this state wide network. Please pass this on
to your friends all over the state.

Thanks again for all of the work you have done this summer. It has really
been great working with each one of you.

Warmest regards,

Lusi Radford
