[nfbwatlk] Cell phone recommendations

I currently have a cell contract with a company which uses CDMA, but my
contract is scheduled to end next month. It is my understanding that all the
talking cell phone products use phones running GSM. Naturally, this alphabet
soup means nothing to me and I intend to keep it that way. I need to know
two things. Am I correct that I need a GSM phone if I want it to talk? If
so, I can switch to another carrier which runs on GSM. Second, I need to
know which of the talking programs is most versatile. I'm willing to go
through a learning curve, provided I don't have to become techno savvy just
to text someone. All I can do now is make calls or answer them. I want to do
more than that. 
I, too, am looking for a cell phone program whichwill allow me to text, keep
a phone book, and know who's calling before I hit the "send" button. It
would be nice, though not necessary, to have GPS capability. The N82 sounds
great, though it's not available on any of the 3-year plans offered here. I
would like recommendations on the talking programs out there. If such
reviews would bore the rest of the list, feel free to write me directly.
However, I sense that I'm not the only one who doesn't know how to evaluate
the choices out there.
By the way, I had to chuckle at the subject line. It was written "cell
phoen" which sounds a lot like "cell fiend" to me. Though they're useful
devices, they can be rather fiendish at times. That's why I don't have voice
mail on my cell and I hesitate to give out my number. Mine is mostly for
outgoing calls. It would be handy to text my kids, though it might shock
them. My youngest asked me recently if they had electricity when I was a
child. Of course we did! How else would we keep the dinosaur barn warm?

Noel:

T-Mobile and AT&T are the two phone companies that work with the N82, a
fully accessible phone when appropriate speech software for cell phones is
added to it. It is also the phone that runs the KNFB Mobile if you wanted to
invest in this software. Whether you do this or not, though, I understand
that the N82 is a nice phone with almost every conceivable feature that you
might need available on it.

I am in the same boat as Alco.  I need an accessible phone and have been
waiting to be forced into getting one.  That moment has arrived.

I would like to continue with T-Mobile, especially since NFB members receive
a discount.  Does anyone know whether T-Mobile sells an accessible phone?

By the way, what kind of a phone do you use?  I am a basic cell phone user,
but might do more if I had a truly accessible phone.  So many choices,
though.  I am out of contract re VZW, and I have been waiting for my phone
to die before choosing something else.  In the meantime, I am trying to
gather information on accessible phones.  I know about Code Factory and
Mobile Speak.

I have used this many, many times. It works quite well. However, it is just
for business listings. 800-free411, can be used for business, government and
residential. It's not bad but for business, 800 goog411 works much better.
