National SSP Pilot (NSSPPP) Update
Jelica, Theresa, and Rob have been busy with this project. Yes, we finished writing the curriculum last summer but now we are working on Phase 2. Phase 2 is developing teaching materials for the teachers to use this curriculum which includes lessons for Deaf-Blind people on how to use SSPs and lessons for SSPs themselves. It also includes. Appendixes with information on how to arrange the room, sample policies and so on. You can see this curriculum on the DBSC website under "New Messages" and find "New! SSP/DB Curriculum<http://seattledbsc.org/SSPCurriculum.html>" but the materials are not yet ready.

Right now, we are making short videos to show how to guide and communicate using tactile signs, using tracking and giving feedback. We are using local deaf-blind actors and SSPs as models. These are people who have volunteered to participate and are being paid to show how SSPs and deaf-blind people work together. We're also explaining to deaf-blind people and teachers around the country about this curriculum and how it can benefit deaf-blind people in their communities. Last spring we travelled to 4 cities and recently we attended the national Conference of Interpreter Trainers to help spread the word. If you want to learn more, come to our presentation at the Lighthouse DB community class on Wed. January 12, 2011.
