Agency profile:  The mission of the Washington State School for the
Blind is to provide specialized quality educational services to visually
impaired/blind youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington.  Our
purpose is to serve as a statewide demonstration and resource center and
provide direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the
children's local communities. Each employee plays a critical role for
the school and our students.  We value our employees and continuously
challenge them to improve the way we provide service to our students and
the community. 

Position profile:  This full-time position requires a certified teacher
who has obtained the high school math endorsement or meets NCLB
standards. This position reports directly to the Director of On-Campus
Education and will be providing education instruction to blind and
visually impaired children.    

The successful candidate will: work in conjunction with work with other
WSSB staff to provide educational services to students on campus, may
perform a variety of assessments, participate in IEP development and
implementation, act as an integral member of the student's educational
team and teach compensatory skills.  These may include but aren't
limited to:

*	High School Mathematics
*	Assistive Technology
*	Braille
*	Use of low vision devices
*	Self-help skills

Required Qualifications:

*	Has graduated from or is currently working toward completion of
a recognized university program specializing in blindness
*	Has a current Washington State Teaching Certification or can
obtain a Washington State Teaching certificate

*	Must pass the Braille Literary Usage Examination 
*	Secondary Level/High School  Math Endorsement
*	Special Education Endorsement
*	Working knowledge of WA State Special Education rules and
regulations as they pertain to children with vision disorders
*	Certified training or experience in Functional Vision
Assessments and Braille instruction
*	Must be able to design individual instruction and IEP goals for
students

Desirable Qualifications:

*	Dual certification (TVI and Orientation & Mobility)
*	2 years of teaching experience 
*	Masters in education or related field
*	Knowledge of laws regarding education of disabled students
*	Experienced in developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum
adaptation, the use of higher level thinking skill, knowledge of
differing learning styles and alternative assessment techniques. 
*	Evidence of previous positive recommendations and/or employment
*	Ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff,
students, and parents as evidenced in evaluations and telephone
references of co-workers. 
*	A cooperative and sensitive attitude in working with students,
parents, and school personnel
*	Familiarity with outside public and private medical, mental
health and social service resources

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as
a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to
become members of the WPEA, or arrange to pay to that union a fee
equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall
be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's
initial 30 days in this classification.
