For your information, and with a request that you help disseminate this information to others who may find the event helpful for themselves or their family members or friends,

I am forwarding a flyer regarding an Assistive Technology Expo on
                              Wed., June 26, 2013, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
at Norco Medical Equipment (formerly Care Medical)

                                1902 Tacoma Ave., S., Tacoma

This community information event is sponsored jointly by
Norco Medical Equipment (formerly Care Medical) and
the Pierce County Aging & Disability Resource Center.

This is a free, information-only display of a wide variety of assistive technology resource equipment.

The Expo is an opportunity for people to look at, touch, feel and try various types of tools that are available for hearing, speech, vision and mobility challenges.

Exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in assistive technology for all areas of life including work, recreation, school and home.

Assistive technology in general includes mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, as well as hardware, software, and peripherals that assist people with disabilities in accessing

computers or other information technologies.

* For example, people with limited hand function may use a keyboard with large keys or a special mouse to operate a computer,

* people who are blind may use software that reads text on the screen in a computer-generated voice,

* people with low vision may use software that enlarges screen content,

* people who are deaf may use a TTY (text telephone), or

* people with speech impairments may use a device that speaks out loud as they enter text via a keyboard.

"People want to live active, independent lives in the community," said Aaron Van Valkenburg, Manager of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources.

"Assistive Technology can be a special way for people to engage in the activities that keep them engaged and participating in their communities."

For more information, please call the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center at (253) 798-4600.

Many thanks,

JoAnn
