Please help to publicize this new group. It was begun by two of last year's scholarship winners. It will prove to be a nice resource for students by students. Thank you

Hi Patti,

Here is the announcement. Thanks for circulating it!

Announcing Facebook Resource for Blind Students

Pathway to Our Dream is a Facebook group designed to serve as a resource for high school and college students who are blind. Features of the group include announcements about a variety of scholarships, a forum for students around the world to meet, and reminders of deadlines. Admins Miso Kwak and Kaiti Shelton, both winners of NFB scholarships in 2013, are available to answer questions, help students research testing requirements, advise students on how to secure accomodations from their schools, refer students to other resources including the NFB and its student divisions, and to help with resume editing.

This is a student-run group, but the administrators do the best they can to be of help to members by sharing their experiences and assisting in answering questions. Many of the scholarship announcements they make are about programs they have applied for or won in the past, and only a few are reserved for blind students or are offered by agencies for the blind. A lot of blind students forget that they are eligible to apply for generic scholarships and those from coorperations including Coca Cola, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Visine, and Google. Reminders can include notes about checking local businesses for scholarship offerings to prompts for students to share FAFSA information with their parents and to start filing. This group can be another great resource for blind students in addition to those they already have.

Please pass this information along to teachers of the visually impaired and students who could benefit from membership in this group. The link for the mobile version of the group, optimal for screenreaders, is https://m.facebook.com/groups/639707646049109?refid=18

IF you write me an announcement as you want it to go out, I would be happy to do so. This strikes me as national anyway. Thanks.

Hi Patti,

I have sent it out over Ohio Talk in the hopes that Eric Duffy would forward it on to other state presidents. I know he’s in Baltimore for BELL training at the moment, but I’ll check with him to be sure he’s seen it once he gets back.

This is a truly awesome idea. I sent it to all the teachers of the visually impaired in our state. You may wish to get it to the NFB Presidents list so other state president can do the same.

Hello all, please spread the word to anyone you feel could benefit.

A few months ago my roommate from the NFB scholarship program, Miso Kwak,
created a facebook group called "Pathway to Our Dream," for college-bound
high school students and those continuing to pursue higher education who are
blind. The purpose of this group is to allow for discussion, the sharing of
resources specific to college entry, and to spread news about scholarship
opportunities. Together, Miso and I are trying to help other students by
answering their questions about preparing for college and sharing our
experiences. In addition to what we do on the group page for everyone to
see, we also make ourselves available to students who want individual help.
I am currently advising a high school senior on how to get accomodations for
her music department auditions, and I also recently helped another group
member write her first resume.

The group has grown from 20 to almost 150 members since Thanksgiving, and we
are excited to see so many students actively seeking scholarship resources
and advice. Miso and I are hoping to add a blog and possibly other
components to the project as the growth demands. We intend for this to
remain a project that is run by students for students, but that is what has
made it so successful thus far.

Please spread the word about this group to any student who could benefit
from membership. All they need is a facebook account to join. The mobile
version of the group, optimal for screenreaders, can be located at:
