Hi Arielle, I would say that the biggest difference between ACB
and NFB (other than our governance), is that NFB has a philosophy
of blindness. I think that this philosophy of blindness makes a
difference in people's lives. People adhere to the philosophy in
more or less degrees, of course. For instance, in traveling
through airports, many people in NFB do it without assistance
from the "Meet and Assist" folks. I have done it without their
help, and will if I have ample time between flights, but will not
if my connection is tight, or if I am traveling with someone else
who needs assistance. For instance, Lark, Maria and I flew to
Seattle last Saturday. Because Maria was using a wheelchair, we
had Meet and Assist. But when we got back to Spokane, they told
me to wait for someone to meet me. But I chose not to, and I
just asked questions and got to where I needed to be to meet my
husband. It was great to do it by myself. Never in all my time
in ACB did anyone ever suggest that not having Meet and Assist
was an option worth trying. That's just one example. Well, I
need to get going here, but this is very interesting discussion.
Debby
