I sent the original article to my daughter, Joanne, who teaches cane travel
in Arizona.  She agreed with me that the technology could be very useful to
a large number of people, but that the implications about blindness in the
article were not helpful.  

 

She added one bit of perspective that I hadn't fully considered.  Although
things are changing, older people are probably less likely to easily manage
an app like this. Yet this is a group that would find a little extra time to
cross a street particularly beneficial.
