[NFBWATlk] dual citizenship

People over the age of 55 do not have to prove language competency or take the test. I studied the book, though, and found it to be fairly simple. People who have to take language competency tests only need to prove competency in one of the two official languages. I considered challenging the French exam, but decided the process was complex enough without throwing an extra hurdle onto the course.

They were willing to make accommodations for testing if I required them, so the blindness aspects of this were not bad. The overall process was quite intensive as far as paper work was concerned. I decided that using a reader was simpler than trying to manage the forms with Jaws. Though technically accessible, the forms were fiddly and very hard to navigate using keystrokes.

I'm just glad it's done and I will never need to deal with the process again!

I add my congratulations. Interesting ceremony. Was there a lot of studying before you were citizenized? (speaking of language, How's that for messing up English.)

It was a virtual ceremony. I had been looking forward to an in person event. In person ceremonies are full of speeches and symbolism. We had a woman who congratulated us and spoke for about three minutes. Then we repeated the oath over Zoom which sounded really ragged. The first time we said it in English. When she began reading us the French oath, Jeff had to leave the room because her accent was so horrible that he couldn't stop laughing! Later he asked me how it felt to know that my French was best in the room. Listening to hers, that wasn't much of a compliment!

Once the ceremony was over, we signed the same oath and scanned and emailed it back. The voter roles will be updated, so I'll be able to vote in my first Canadian provincial election later this month. Much more civil tone here. I'm voting for one of Paul's university colleagues, though he has little chance of winning. No secret ballot here -- yet! But there will be.

Hi Mary Ellen,

Congratulations! Did you take that oath virtually or were you able to go somewhere in person?
