Hi all,
For those who have a guide dog, or those who just keep up with legislation
relating to the blind, Dusty's Law has passed in New Jersey. This law will
provide protection to guide dogs and their handlers, as well as guide dog
pups and their puppy raisers.
The law is in response to a sad situation which happened to a Seeing Eye pup
named Dusty and his puppy raiser. The pair were going for a walk when they
were attacked by another dog. Pup and human sustained physical injuries,
and though they were able to recover from them the psychological damage
prevented Dusty from continuing his training to become a Seeing Eye dog.
I think this is a great piece of legislation and something more states
should adopt. I've heard some terrible stories in the past few months about
blind people and their dogs being in serious danger, like the man who's
guide dog died protecting him and his young son a few months ago for those
who heard that story. It is sad to see that guide dog teams are not given
as much protection as they should, but it is heartening to see New Jersey
take this step. Once this bill is signed by the state governor it will go
into effect.
Just thought I'd share.
