Hi Nella,
The area is actually a bit of both, but past land patography old road beds,
low areas where springs had once bben frequented and built up areas where
old fence lines have become hedge rows grown up and over with trees, scrub
and vines, make areas that were once level quite interesting to navigate.
This whole area is also inter connected with several Civil War battle
fields, especially Cold Harbor, Seven Pines and the area in the Chicahanamy
swamps known around here as the Seven Grape Vine Bridges. We have found
both Civil War items and Native American artifacts here on our property.
When my dad and grandfather worked the property, it was mostly pasture and
crop fields because they supplied produce to military bases up and down the
east coast. The property was surrounded with pretty good forest. Today,
several of the large pastures and fields have been allowed to grow over and
a few working lot areas are now heavily wooded over. We are working with a
neighbor who rents people's fields and sells produce to major grocery
chains. He's using one field for produce such as tomatoes and winter
squashes and was using a bit larger field for hay they cut and rolled for
their own animals until my cousin decided he didn't want them to do anything
with that section. Him and his wife bring their registered show quality
Golden Retreavers there and give them the space to run and romp around.
That's okay, but now he'll have to keep it cut. I won't have my neighbors
cutting it without the bennifit of bailing the cut hay.
Our cabin sits in the back of the property at the left hand edge of a rather
large rectangle pasture/field. Everything connected with our gardens and
the chickens are spread out in front of us and along the right side. The
barn is further over to the right, but can still be seen from our front
porch.
