Well! the sheep are in their winter quarters and will remain there until about the end of
September, depending on grass growth, which, on the BlanchRanch, usually, starts with a hiss and a
roar on October 1st, though with the mild winters Southland is now experiencing, it tends to get
underway even as much as a month earlier than heretofore.
This year, Sam had a helper: one of his parishioners who has a couple of really good heading dogs.
Sam said that it was a real delight to see those dogs, particularly the old girl (13 years old)
control those sheep. She would creep around them, slowly collecting them into a bunch, watching for
any sheep that might be going to make a break for freedom and anticipating her movement before the
sheep had even realised herself what she was going to attempt to do and blocking her.
They usually bunch up at the narrow gate they have to go through and just stand there like mules
stamping their feet, but those dogs had them flowing through as though they were on rollers.
I saw Rambo and he is just as much of a pet as he was before he went out to become a sheep.
