Tracey!  As I am not familiar with the American rabbit, I have to ask:  wouldn't encouraging those 
voracious creatures to stop by and take a nibble, result in your wildlife refuge being reduced to a 
useless desert?

Rowana was talking about the intersection of agriculture with a healthy
environment.  I have begun the process of applying to have my yard become a
certified wildlife garden.  The idea is to give wildlife places to stop in
an urban landscape that will help them make it between larger wild areas, or
even give them a place to live.  I've got water, cover, food sources for
birds and insects, and some birdhouses, so I think I'm ready to go.  The
most complicated thing about the application is it only wants native plants
listed, so I have to research the ones I'm not sure about before I write
them on the list.

Even if I don't get certified, I think my yard is a wildlife-friendly place.

This spring, I worked with a designer-gardener to remove a big patch of
aggressive weeds and replace it with a little meadow of plants for
pollinators and birdes, to add to what I've already got.  I think it came
out really neat.  The flowers are pretty; something's always in bloom, and,
when they're done, there will be seeds for birds.  Not to mention the
nibblers like rabbits, who think black-eyed susans are delicious.
