One of the saddest stories that I have ever read is "Koojo by Steven King about a St Bernard that
was infected with rabies when he was bitten by a rabid bat.

Park rangers in bear country have a joke that goes something like this: How
can you tell when a grizzly has caught a tourist? His scat smells like
pepper and has little bells in it.
What rangers have told us is to make some noise, like singing or saying Hi
bears, here I come, and the animals will usually make themselves scarce.

There have been some rabid coyotes and foxes around in New York and New
Jersey this summer, and I don't know what would deter a rabid animal. By
definition, they're not in their right minds.

Wild animals have just as much right to live in America as people do:
actually, a lot more as they have been there a hell of a lot longer, but
they can be dangerous and people must be able to protect themselves, so,
other than firearms which, in my view, are, entirely, out of the picture,
what nonlethal means of personal protection are available? Would it be
legal to carry pepper spray or a taser/stungun!
