[AG-EQ] Just a week ago

My house is the closest that there is to the river, but there is a very sturdy stopbank between it
and it. However, this was a monster of a flood, perhaps the highest on record. The river was 16
feet [5 metres] above its normal level.
All the residents of East Gore were evacuated. I have complete faith in the strength of the bank,
but, as was pointed out to me, while it may have held where it runs through my property, if it had
been breeched further upstream, I would have been in grave danger.
However, this did not happen and it was only my river paddock that was flooded.
I suspect, and it is only a suspicion which I don't know how to check, that there is an underground
stream that runs through my paddocks, then under the bank and discharges into my river paddock
creek. However, when the Mataura rises and prevents the above ground creek from getting away and it
backs up, that underground stream, in its turn, is prevented from discharging thus forcing it, in
its turn to rise, and all this excess water is forced upward and collects on the surface down at the
far end of the back and church paddocks. I have never seen standing water at the house
end.--------------------------------------------------

Hi Jewel.
So, did the water go over your bridge, but not affect it, or were you
altogether high and dry?
Tracy

You might recall that it was just a week plus a day ago that we had the
largest flood on record,
but, nevertheless, when I was pulling out some grass yesterday at the base
of the floodbank, but on
the house side, not the river's , the soil was, scarcely, damp and one would
have thought that a
drop or two of the millions of gallons of water that were sloshing around
just a few feet away would
hav seeped through, but such was not the case!
Keith, one of my neighbours grazes a couple of cattle beasts in the River
Paddock but he did get
them out in time, but he will not be able to put them back there for, I
guess, a month or so because
all the grass will be covered with a layer of silt, so that will have to dry
out and blow away or be
buried by inches of new growth.
Did I tell you that it was not the bridge over my creek that Sam saw
travelling at, high speed,
towards Foveaux Strait!

        Jewel
