You will be getting, heartily, sick and tired of my saying how, devilishly, clever he is, but I *
thought that I really had him licked: note that I said * thought: past tense!
I would love to be able to put anything that is, vaguely, edible back into the cupboard: more of
that in a moment: but there is, simply, no room, so I have to rely on my remembering to keep
everything on the table screwed or tied down; and in this instance, the * everything being my
screwtop pot of honey.
Here entereth the past tense of think. I looked on the table for the jar of honey of which, I was,
absolutely certain, I had screwed the top on, and screwed it on, very firmly. However, of honey
there was not a sign, but it was possible that I had missed it in my search, and as you are well
aware, when one is blind and misses something by a zillionth of an inch, one might, just as well,
have missed it by a mile, so when Pearl came in, I asked her if she could see the honey on the
table, and what she handed me was the screwtop lid, but of the sticky stuff, there was not a sign:
not even a chewed up plastic container on the floor! How in the blue blazes, had he got the
screwtop off the jar! Of course, I am sure that, at some time, I will find it out in the
backyard!!!
and to expand on putting things in the cupboard for safety: a few nights ago, I roasted two chicken
pieces and some potato slices for my evening meal, but only eat one of the chicken pieces and a
portion of the potato slices, so I put the one that remained in the cupboard under the kitchen
bench, leaving it in the roasting pan with the untouched portion of the spuds.
The next night, knowing that all I had to do was to reheat the chicken and roast potatoes, but when
I opened the cupboard, I found an empty roasting pan: well, empty that is apart from the oil.
If it had been Guideon who had found the cupboard door open, and devoured the chicken and potatoes,
he, most assuredly, would not have left the oil, so it was obvious that one, or a horde of
freeliving rodents had come in from outside! my
