I received this email from Michele  Scheib of Mobility International USA and wanted to forward it along to all of you. The
statistics of international students with disabilities studying in the international was really interesting.

I seldom think about my limitations, and they never make me sad. Perhaps there is just a touch of yearning at times; but it is vague, like a breeze among flowers.

Hi Anmol,

I haven’t forgotten about our discussions and ideas, it just has been so busy here. It will be better if we could write some ideas in our next grant (2011-2012), so that they can be a prioritized project. I recently got statistics from the National Survey on Student Engagement on international students with disabilities in the U.S. in 2010 (it only surveys first-year and senior students in college). In this national  survey it showed 5% of international students have disabilities (although 10% of the total survey respondents, including U.S. students, reported they have a disability).

The following is the breakdown of how many international students respondents there were by disability type:
280 Sensory disability
75 Mobility disability
231 Learning disability
160 Developmental disability
131 Mental disability
91 Medical disability
85 Other disability
1053  Total

Interesting! We’re also going to have an inservice with an immigration attorney in the next couple of months to ask about some international students with disabilities topics. What were the questions that you had around this? Maybe I could get some answers to share with you. I’m thinking I’m not going to have time in the next couple of months to organize the webinar idea of yours with an int’l student with disabilities panel, but I’d still be happy to be on one of your blind international student group’s teleconference calls. I have some ideas that would be good to bounce around and get input on.

Cheers,
Michele Scheib
